Home and Studio, Oceanview Road, Bowen Island, B.C.

The main house was originally designed for the architect’s own family. The studio-guest room-garage building was designed and constructed for subsequent owners. The over all design of the main house is a simple, easily constructed form with large roof over hangs. The main floor living-dining-kitchen have both lovely ocean views plus south solar orientation. All three bedrooms above also have this view-sun orientation. Service areas (entry, mudroom, laundry, baths, stairs) are located on the north side of the plan. A few steps down from the dining area is a large deck. The lower deck level allows for unobstructed views from the living-dining rooms over the deck’s outdoor furniture and glass guards. Off the kitchen to the East is another deck for dining and bar-b-que. The studio-guest room/garage accessory building was designed to compliment the main home’s character (wood shingle siding, wood windows, hip roof) and provides two studio-areas for the owners plus guest accommodation and a sauna. The darker exterior colours of the main house and the newer studio/garage help visually integrate these two buildings into the wooded landscape. (Interior design by Barbara Wahler of Studio B).
